Research topics

  • Two-phase cooling of electronic components
Contact: Tom Saenen - Martine Baelmans
Driven by miniaturization and the continuing increase in clock speed and data transfer conventional cooling of electronics has reached its limits. Two-phase micro scale cooling is envisaged as a cooling method that has the potential to cool next generation electronics. Different aspects of two-phase micro scale flow and heat transfer will be studied to be able to produce a two-phase heat sink with cooling rates up to 500 W/cm2 or possibly even higher.
  • Selective cooling of micro electronics by means of electrostatic actuated liquid droplets.
Contact: Herman Oprins - Gustaaf Borghs - Martine Baelmans
Theoretical and experimental study of electrostatic actuation of droplets in flat channels aiming at an electronics cooling concept. Electrical, mechanical and thermal aspects are investigated. The research is conducted in collaboration with IMEC.
  • Enhanced single phase micro structured heat sinks

Research topics

  • Optimal control of turbulent mixing
Contact: Sara Delport - Johan Meyers - Martine Baelmans
Turbulent mixing occurs in various industrial applications. By changing the turbulent flow features, the efficiency of industrial installations may be drastically improved. We employ optimization techniques combined with DNS and LES to achieve these goals.
  • Computational aeroacoustics of muffler noise using large eddy simulations
Contact: Peng Wu - Johan Meyers - Martine Baelmans
Computational aeroacoustics (CAA) calculations of the flow-induced noise emitted by mufflers in stationary and pulsating flow using large eddy simulations (LES) are performed.
  • Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) methods for Aeroacoustics [Poster]
Contact: Vladimir Jovanovic - Johan Meyers - Martine Baelmans
Fully developed compressible turbulent flows over open cavities are dominated by the large scale coherent structures (CS). Those appear to be the most energy containing and responsible for the aerodynamic noise generation. Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) is a post-processing method which is to be applied upon the data obtained from 3D DNS/LES open cavity numerical simulations.
  • Quality and reliability of large-eddy simulations
Contact: Johan Meyers The error behavior of subgrid-scale modeling and numerical discretization in large-eddy simulation is studied. Modifications of subgrid closures which account for numerical errors, and improve simulation quality, are investigated.
  • Computational and Experimental analysis of a wide cleaning fan for a harvester
Contact: Mekonnen Gebreslasie - Johan Meyers - Martine Baelmans - Josse De Baerdemaeker
This PhD research focuses on computational and experimental studies to improve the grain cleaning ability of a wide cross-flow fan for the second cleaning system in a combine harvester.
