The 2008 Leuven edition of the Workshop on Trefftz methods (Trefftz.08) is the 5th in a series of workshops organised every three years. Former editions took place in Cracow (Poland 1996), Sintra (Portugal 1999), Exceter (UK 2002) and Zilina (Slovakia 2005). Since the first workshop in 1996, research towards the rediscovery of the Trefftz methodology and its applications has taken an accelerated flight. Mainly driven by high-performance issues, Trefftz based methods have become successful alternatives for the more familiar Ritz methods in various fields of computational mechanical engineering including solid mechanics, vibro-acoustics, thermal analysis, bio-mechanics, structural dynamics, optics, etcetera.
This 5th Workshop on Trefftz methods (Trefftz.08) aims at continuing the successful workshop series. Trefftz.08 will focus on modern applications of Trefftz based methodologies. One of the main goals of the workshop is to show that Trefftz based methods can assist in solving problems in various fields of mechanical engineering; especially in those fields for which the use of other conventional methods is prohibited. In order to obtain an interesting mix of theoretical and applied presentations, both academic and industrial contributions are welcomed. Authors are invited to submit abstracts according to the submission guidelines.
