Department of Mechanical Engineering
About Us
Welcome on the home page of the Department of Mechanical Engineering ("Departement Werktuigkunde" in Dutch). Under general information you find an overview of the Department's structure, contact information, and the organizational chart.
Research
The Department has four Divisions:
- Production engineering, Machine design and Automation (PMA)
- Applied Mechanics and Energy Conversion (TME)
- Biomechanics (BMe)
- Centre for Industrial Management/Traffic and Infrastructure (CIB).
The research page gives a concise overview of current research. The page with the list of PhD theses defended at our Department also gives a good impression about our research interests.
Education
The departmental staff teaches in several Bachelor and Master level study programs, both within and outside of the K.U.Leuven.
These include Bachelor/Masters programs taught in dutch:
- Bachelor in Mechanical Engineering
- Master in Mechanical Engineering
- Master of Energy Engineering (joint program with Electrical Engineering department)
-
Master in Traffic, Logistics and Intelligent Transport systems
and International Masters programs taught in English:
Further information is assembled on the Academic programs page.
Services for Industry
The large expertise in research and education of the Department Mechanical Engineering can be consulted by external partners. In addition, specialised instruments can be rented for short periods of time.
The contact persons of these services can be found on the web pages of the related research activities, mentioned elsewhere on this page.
Spin-offs
The following companies are spin-offs of our Department. In most cases, these companies still have active research links with the Divisions in the Department from which they originated.
- Adinex
- LAB (Leuven Air Bearings)
- Custom8
- EconCore
- ICMS
- LMS
- Materialise
- LayerWise
- Nikon Metrology. (Started under the name of Metris until it was acquired by Nikon in 2009.)
- OptiDrive
- Elytra (formerly called SteelThermHex)
- Intermodalics
A number of spin-offs have already been integrated within other companies: Krypton is part of Metris since 2005; Data Analysis Products has merged with Emerson Process Management/CSI in 2000; and Protec Engineering is now a division of M-tech.
Jobs
Open Research positions, PhD positions, and Postdoc positions are published on the site of the Arenberg Doctoral School.
