Introduction
![]() | SOCRATES is the action programme of the European Commission that promotes cooperation in the area of education. SOCRATES is the continuation and expansion of earlier educational programmes such as ERASMUS. All European Union member states are eligible to participate in the SOCRATES programme, as well as Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Cyprus, Poland, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Romania, the Slovak Republic, Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania, Bulgaria and Slovenia. For the academic year 2001/2002 K.U.Leuven has signed Socrates agreements for student exchanges with 320 partner institutions in 24 countries. |

Application process
At K.U.Leuven, the application process for exchange students is administered in the faculties and departments. You can contact our department through the exchange programme coordinator at your home university. Our department will provide you with all the information you require, including information on courses and programmes, and with the appropriate application forms.

Your study programme
You must establish a study programme before you can enroll at our department. Consult the SOCRATES/ECTS advisor at your home institute on details.
The courses
To select courses to establish your study programme, please consult the internet address listed below. There are a few keywords that you must know to succesfully surf through the various information pages. Make a note of them before you proceed.
- You must select courses from the second cycle (master's degree).
- You then select courses from the entries:
- Master in Mechanical-Electrical Engineering, first year
- Master in Mechanical-Electrical Engineering, second year
- Master in Mechanical-Electrical Engineering, third year
- Altough all the courses are taught in Dutch, there is a possibility for taking the examination in English.

Specific courses
There are a few courses that are of particular interest to international students. You can earn ECTS credits by doing an industrial traineeship, or a specific engineering design project. The Department of Mechanical Engineering welcomes international students who wish to participate in research projects. Courses that may be suitable for personal ECTS credits are:
- HF90: Industrial Traineeship (90 h., 3 ECTS pt.)
- H265, H743, HB31: engineering design project work in selected topics (160 h., 6 ECTS pt.)
- H289, HB71, HB72: thesis Work (450 h., 15 ECTS pt.)
