Ben Immers first worked as a research fellow at The Netherlands Institute for Transport Research, where he participated in several research projects.
In 1976 he accepted a post as lecturer in transportation planning and transportation modelling at the University of Delft (T.U.Delft).
In 1985 he became associate professor at the same departement.
In 1992 he was appointed as the director of the Delft Institute for Transport, Infrastructure and Logistics (TRAIL).
Since August 1993 Ben Immers has been working at the Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research (TNO Inro).
In 1996 Ben Immers accepetd a postion (part time) as university professor in transportation planning and highway engineering at K.U.leuven.
His research intersets include the application of optimisation models in the transportation planning proces, development of information systems for the transport sector, dynamic traffic management, combined and integrated freight transport chains, and the relation between (tele)communication networks and the physical distribution pattern of activities.
He frequently participated as a technical adviser in national and international planning activities related to traffic management, transportation planning and transportation modelling.
