Why would you do research in Leuven?

Leuven (Louvain) is an attractive university city in the centre of Flanders (Belgium), only 25 km from Brussels, the heart of Europe. It is located at the great divide between Germanic and Latin Europe. Leuven is undoubtedly an international meeting point, full of young bright people, and a nursery of the Europe to be. The central position of Belgium and a dense network of roads and railroads provide easy access to cities like Amsterdam, Cologne, London and Paris (in less than three hours by train or by bus!).

The Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, the oldest university (1425 A.D.) in the Low Countries (Benelux), has a splendid academic history with such personalities as Erasmus, Mercator, Vesalius and Minckelers as former faculty members. The university currently counts 31,000 students, 12% are of foreign origin. The sparkling multi-cultural life adds a young and dynamic feature to the old city. Cultural activities in English are abundant. Films are always shown in their original language.

While Dutch is the native tongue in Leuven, most Flemish students have a good knowledge of English, French and German as well. Many graduate and postgraduate courses and programmes are taught in English. The University has excellent opportunities to learn and improve modern languages: more than 20 are taught in the language laboratories!

Doctoral Programme

The Centre for Industrial Management (CIB) offers a doctoral programme following the regulations and admission procedures of the Arenberg doctoral school. On average, the doctoral programme lasts four to five years of study and research.

The degree of Doctor of Engineering Sciences is awarded to a candidate who:

   1. demonstrates a comprehensive knowledge of the chosen field of study, and
   2. presents a research dissertation demonstrating scholarly distinctions and the ability to advance knowledge within that field of study.

Doctoral students are supervised by an advisor and a programme committee of at least three members.

The Centre for Industrial Management currently has thirteen doctoral students (see Industrial management Research Activities and the Traffic and Infrastructure Research Page).

Highly motivated graduates with excellent academic record and a strong interest in pursuing an academic career and/or in specializing in scientific research in Industrial Management are encouraged to apply for the doctoral programme.

Application Procedure

Each doctoral candidate is required to fill out a ''first acquaintance'' application form (available here). This form will be used to communicate the candidate's profile and research interests to the faculty members of the CIB. Once one of the faculty members is interested in supervising the doctoral research, the candidate will be guided to proceed further with the formal doctoral application procedure of the University. The application form can be sent to the CIB any time during the year.

Practical Information

Foreigners, who want to reside at the University for research purposes for a shorter or longer period of time, are governed by the stipulations of the Foreigners Law of December 15, 1980. This Law determines the conditions for obtaining the right to reside in Belgium for foreigners, as well as the procedure to be followed.

Further information regarding the status of doctoral students in Belgium and possible fellowships and funding opportunities can be found on the 'PhD - webpage' of the University.
