BMe/PMA team won 2nd place in LRD training course on 'Exploitation of Research'

Vincent Verhaert, Steven Leuridan, Dorien Van Deun en Claus Claeys received second place honors (in a tie with first place) for their SleepPoint project in the framework of the Leuven Research and Development training course on "Exploitation of Research"

BMe-researchers participate in the “studentenmarathon”!

The 14th of March several researchers of the Biomechanics Section ran 10 or 21 km during the “studentenmarathon” (http://studentenmarathon.ulyssis.org/), a good training since they will also participate in the 10 Miles of Antwerp! With this action they want to support the research for pseudoartrosis in children and raise some money for the Bone4Kids-foundation (www.bone4kids.be). One more month to go!

Jan Demol was awarded the Best Poster award at the International Conference on Biophysical Stimuli and Mass Transport for Tissue Development

Jan Demol was awarded the Best Poster award at the International Conference on Biophysical Stimuli and Mass Transport for Tissue Development (http://www.term.nu/bioreactor/, 18-19 November, the Netherlands) for his computational and experimental work on the relation between oxygen and cell behaviour in hydrogels for tissue engineering. The same work was recently published in Biomaterials, the number one ISI journal in biomaterials science (IF 7.365), see DOI:10.1016/j.biomaterials.2010.08.093 for the full paper.

Véronique Peiffer

ir.

Joris Walraevens, Bert Willaert and Gert Heirman receive a "Best Exploitation Plan Award"

On the 12th of May 2010, 20 groups of doctoral students and/or postdocs presented their exploitation plans in the framework of the LRD training course on ‘Exploitation of Research: Technology and knowledge transfer’. Based on research on the biomechanics of cervical spine prostheses, Joris Walraevens, Bert Willaert and Gert Heirman presented their Spine-off project: a company that will provide motion analyses of the spine and pre-operative planning for spinal surgery.

They received a ‘Best exploitation plan award’ from the jury (Marc Lambrechts (Capricorn), Herman Verrelst (Cartagenia), Rudi Cuyvers (LRD) and Veerle Bruggeman (DOC)). This event was organized by LRD with support of Arenberg Doctoral School, Doctoral School of Biomedical Sciences, Industrieel Onderzoeksfonds, Vlaanderen in Actie, het Agentschap Ondernemen, EFRO, Provincie Vlaams-Brabant and the Vlaamse Gemeenschap.

Aurélie Carlier received the Best Poster award at National Day of Biomedical Engineering

During the National Day of Biomedical Engineering 2010, held the 26th November 2010 in Brussels, Aurélie Carlier received the Best Poster award for her work on the computational modeling of calcium mediated bone regeneration. Congratulations to all contributors!

Johan Kerkhofs and Aurélie Carlier receive student awards at CMBBE

During the 10th International Symposium on Computer Methods in Biomechanics and Biomedical Engineering (CMBBE), held in Berlin from the 11th until the 14th of April 2012, three BMe researchers were nominated for the student awards (best oral presentation): Aurélie Carlier, Johan Kerkhofs and Joyce Van den Broeck. Johan Kerkhofs received the third prize for his work on the coupling of cell mechanics to the intracellular ERK-signaling pathway. The study on multiscale modeling of sprouting angiogenesis during fracture healing by Aurélie Carlier was awarded with the fourth prize. Congratulations to all contributors!

Antwerp 10 Miles for bone4kids

The 22nd of April several researchers of the Biomechanics Section participated in the Ten Miles of Antwerp together with more than 20 000 other runners (http://www.antwerp10miles.be/)! The weather was good, the crowd was cheerful and the course was long but nice. All the runners successfully reached the finish line and collected with this action over 1300€ to support the Bone4Kids-foundation (www.bone4kids.be)!
